How to disagree with your boss by agreeing first: Agree, Add, Ask

By Yogesh Pandey · 26 October 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer

Use three lines: Agree, Add, Ask. Agree: “I see why that makes sense.” Add: “Here’s one thing I’m seeing differently.” Ask: “Can we look at that for a minute?” You are not questioning your boss. You are giving them a second angle they can use.

The two usual moves

Your boss’s plan has a hole in it. Most people say nothing, or say “That won’t work,” and the room goes cold.

Agree, Add, Ask

Agree: “I see why that makes sense.” Add: “Here’s one thing I’m seeing differently.” Ask: “Can we look at that for a minute?” In that order, you stay on the same side while still saying the hard thing.

It works beyond meetings

Your manager’s plan for your project. A co-founder fight about pricing. A group project in college. The polite copy nods and complains in the car. You say it in the room.

Try this next time
  1. In your next meeting, write the three lines beforehand.
  2. Say them in order.
  3. Notice whether the room stays warm.
