How to fix a shaky voice without faking confidence: check your breath, jaw and shoulders

By Yogesh Pandey · 22 October 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer

Check three things in your body: breath, jaw and shoulders. A shaky voice starts in the body before the sentence does. The breath goes high, the jaw gets tight and the shoulders go up. Notice first, without changing anything, then let go: breath low, jaw soft, shoulders down. It takes ten seconds.

Why faking confidence makes it worse

Your voice shakes and everyone hears it, so you try to sound confident. And it gets worse. You cannot fake your way out of a shaky voice.

It starts in the body

A shaky voice starts in the body before the sentence. The breath goes high. The jaw gets tight. The shoulders go up.

The 10-second check

Right now, do not change anything. Just notice. Breath: chest or belly? Jaw: tight or loose? Shoulders: up or down?

Now let go. Breath low. Jaw soft. Shoulders down. That is you, with less in the way. The check comes from my State Check drill.

Try this next time
  1. Before your next meeting, do it in the lift. Ten seconds.
  2. Notice breath, jaw and shoulders first. Then let go: breath low, jaw soft, shoulders down.

Why does my voice shake when I’m nervous?

The shake starts in the body before the sentence: breath rises high, the jaw tightens and the shoulders lift. Releasing those three often calms the voice.
