What to say when your mind goes blank mid-sentence: the Restart Line

By Yogesh Pandey · 26 October 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer

Say “Let me say that more simply,” then give the short version in one sentence. That is the Restart Line. People notice the restart, and a restart sounds like someone in control. Panic, five apologies and starting again faster do not.

When the word is gone

You are mid-sentence, everyone is looking, and the next word is gone. The usual moves are to panic, say sorry five times, and start again faster.

The Restart Line

Say: “Let me say that more simply.” Then say the short version. You will think everyone noticed you lost it. They noticed the restart, and a restart sounds controlled.

Where to use it

On a client call: “Let me say that more simply: we can deliver by Friday.” Pitching an investor: “Let me say that more simply: we save clinics two hours a day.” In a viva: “Let me say that more simply, sir: my project predicts rainfall from three inputs.”
